Year 1 Phonics Screening Check:

In 2012, the Government introduced a statutory ‘Phonics Screening Check’ for Year One pupils. This ‘check’ is designed to ascertain if a child has met the ‘required standard’ in synthetic phonics understanding/decoding.

The test comprised of 40 ‘words’ for the children to decode. Some of these words were ‘real words’, whereas some were nonsensical words designed to test children’s ability to segment words using phonetic knowledge. Children who did not meet the required standard in Year One will retake a similar test in Year 2.
